Having Fun with Bernat Softee Baby Chunky Yarn – A review or a love story, you decide

March 7, 2018 by Robin, Avon Rep and Owner at Imperial Crochet

I’ve been busy lately playing with my Bernat Softee Baby Chunky yarn.  I love the way bulky yarn crochets up so fast and because it’s a baby weight chunky, (5 weight) it’s super soft and drapey.

It’s 100% acrylic and I learned the hard way that it is sold in different amounts depending on the color.  For instance, the solid colors are sold in skeins of 5 oz / 140g, the variegated is sold in skeins of 4.25 oz / 120g.  So guess who didn’t pay attention to that when she made her last purchase of yarn?  Yes.  Me.  But I solved the dilemma by adding some white stripes to my project and I think it actually looks cuter because of this.

I discovered it by mistake!

I bought my first batch of Softee Baby Chunky to make a baby blanket for my niece.  She was having her second child and had requested a blanket in the same colors I had used when I made her first baby’s blanket.

I wanted to make the new blanket in a different style and so I went online and ordered the Softee Baby Chunky in what I thought were the correct colors.  After receiving the package, I realized I was totally wrong.  The colors did NOT match.  Not even close!  My bad.

I decided to keep the yarn and reorder something else for my niece’s blanket.

I’m glad I did because a few weeks later, that cute hat on the Olympics turned up and I made one using some of my white Softee Baby Chunky yarn.

I then started crocheting a baby blanket using the same stitch pattern as the hat with the Cozy Gray yarn I had. And then I used the Blue Lagoon for another blanket and I made a couple of baby hats with it as well.

So pretty in Blue Lagoon!

Yes.  I’m in love with Bernat Softee Baby Chunky yarn.  It crochets up so quickly with a U.S. L/11 8mm hook and the texture is so nice and soft, I just can’t help myself.

Being the yarn hoarder that I am, I went ahead and bought more of it to play with!

PS… I was not paid to say any of this.  I bought the yarn myself and fell hopelessly in love.

I did find mixed reviews online.  It seems people either love it… or…  well, I honestly didn’t see anyone say they hate it but there were some low scores.

Your Turn!  Have you ever used the Bernat Softee Baby chunky yarn?  Do you have any complaints or compliments for it?  Please feel free to share your thoughts about this yarn in the comments.  I love hearing from my readers and I’d love to know what you think of this yarn.

This looks perfect for making a cost-effective afghan. I agree, the white addition helps a lot with the colors.

Never used it, though i am convinced i will in the future now i’ve seen real pictures. I prefer chunky yarns lately – Everything works up nice and quickly, which is a huge plus.
